Why Every IT Professional Needs a Portfolio
Why Every IT Professional Needs a Portfolio
The Problem With Just Having a Resume
In IT, everyone applying for the same job has a similar resume. CompTIA certifications, a degree, some help desk experience — it all starts to look the same to a hiring manager. A portfolio is how you stand out from the crowd and show what you can actually do.
What an IT Portfolio Proves
A portfolio shows employers three things a resume simply cannot:
- You can communicate technically — writing about your projects proves you understand them deeply enough to explain them
- You learn on your own — self-driven projects and a homelab show initiative that no certification can replicate
- You solve real problems — documenting real challenges and how you worked through them is more convincing than any bullet point
What to Put In Your Portfolio
You don’t need to wait until you have years of experience. Start with what you have right now:
- Homelab writeups — document your network setup, VMs, or any server you are running at home
- Study notes — share what you are learning as you learn it
- Project walkthroughs — step by step guides of things you have built or configured
- Troubleshooting stories — describe a problem you hit and exactly how you solved it
